Last month, we took the opportunity to highlight our learn-to-skate and youth hockey programs. However, there is a lot more we can say about hockey programs and why you should enroll your kids this fall and winter. Hockey is a fun and exciting sport, especially popular in New England, where we get long, cold winters. If your child has expressed interest in hockey or you are looking for a good winter activity, check out the hockey programs at The Edge Sports Center!
Are you looking for good youth hockey programs for your kids? Here’s why you should check out our programs at The Edge!
Improve Balance and Coordination
Learning to play any sport will improve your physical fitness, but hockey has a real focus on balance and coordination. In most sports, you run around on the ground, but to play hockey, you need to know how to skate first. Skating looks easy once you get the hang of it, but it’s a tricky skill to master. It’s even trickier when you add the challenge of moving the puck around. The improved balance and coordination kids pick up from learning to play hockey are skills they will take into all aspects of their lives.
Learn to Play on a Team
Playing in a team isn’t natural for everyone, but it’s something you can learn. One of the best ways to learn teamwork is in the context of sports when you all have a common goal and a specific role on the team. As the team comes together, the players learn to communicate and help one another. They also learn how to read signals from each other so they know when to come and assist a teammate and when to wait.
Stay Active in the Winter
New England winters are cold, and it can be hard to stay active. Hockey is supposed to be played on the ice, so it has to be a little cold, even on an indoor rink. Because you usually play on an indoor rink, you only have to brave the cold between the door and the car. However, there are plenty of outdoor games on local ponds and lakes, so learning to play hockey may encourage some enthusiasm for outdoor activity in the winter.
