As a facility that hosts some of the most recognized youth hockey programs in the country, our staff at The Edge Sports Center is often asked a familiar question. When is the best time to enroll your child in a youth hockey program? While the answer can fluctuate depending on the child, the overall recommendation may come as a bit of a surprise.
Soon Rather Than Later
When it comes to competitive hockey, most children hit the ice at the age of four. Let us clarify – most children begin skating between the ages of two and three. By the age of four, the child is ready to begin a hockey program. Seems a little early? Let us assure you that it is not!
At the age of four your child has the endurance to withstand the ice for a longer period of time as well as take direction. As a sport that requires several skills, earlier is better when you are considering a learn-to-skate or youth hockey program.
Skills Learned
One of the most important skills required from any hockey player is the ability to skate. Unlike other sports that many children can pick up and go – hockey requires time, patience, and – ice! With this in mind, it will come as no surprise that the earliest hockey programs focus on skating skills, ice safety, and having fun!
A learn to skate program will help your child understand the basics of skating and how to maneuver the ice. Skills such as skating forward, backward, starting and stopping are generally the main focus. Once these skills are mastered, the child can move into a hockey program that will then introduce them to fundamentals of the sport. However, it is important to note that many younger children jump into a hockey program having never skated before.
